Ethos & Values

Organizing a music festival is a responsibility the Afternoon Umbrella Friends take very seriously. There are implications on so many things that need to be considered: sustainability of the environment, the safety of the community, and the health of our local music & arts industry. We hope that publishing our ethos will help our attendees spread the culture and bring our vision to fruition!

OUR CORE VALUES

Environmental Sustainability

We could not do what we are doing without the planet we live on, so we aim to produce the best possible event without causing unnecessary harm to the environment by considering the Earth in all of our communications + decision making.

Creativity

Embrace alternative ways of thinking, opting to be innovative, adaptable, and flexible when attempting to solve problems. It is through creativity that we harness the potential to make positive change.

Authenticity

We aim to be genuine, true to our own personalities, values, and spirit, regardless of pressure from the industry or social norms. By making sure not to misrepresent ourselves through our decision making, we will not only build trust with our community but attract others of similar values.

Diversity

We value equity, inclusion, and dignity for all living beings. We recognize that our differences make us stronger, and that by including different kinds of people, we can learn from each other.

Community

Being a part of an engaging community gives us a sense of belonging. It enables us to share personal experiences, and to support the perpetual growth of each other. Being a part of a community makes us feel as through we are a part of something greater than ourselves.

Collaboration

It is our belief that whole is greater than the sum of its parts. By making collaboration one of our core values, we bring more individuals to the table. This greatly boosts not only our productivity through cooperation, but our creativity by inviting new perspectives.

LEAVE NO TRACE

The AUF sustainability program aims to mitigate waste through comprehensive participant education, resilient on-site infrastructure, & landfill diversion strategies.

We honor the LEAVE NO TRACE policy, so here’s how you can help the cause:

PLAN AHEAD FOR YOUR MOOP (MOOP = Matter Out Of Place)

  • Carpool Organization: https://www.groupcarpool.com/t/5qt8s3

    • All vehicles carrying 3 OR MORE people will receive exclusive AUF swag and put in a raffle to win one free ticket for Umbrella Weekend 2024!

  • PLAN WHILE YOU PACK! Bring your own reusable water bottles, cups, plates, utensils instead of single use items.

  • TEST YOUR GEAR to withstand camping, dancing, & environmental exposure

  • BE MINDFUL OF FESTIVAL OUTFIT & COSTUME MATERIALS! Don’t bring things that will fall off your clothing, hat, face, or props! These include feathers, beads, sequins, glitter, etc.

  • CIGARETTE BUTTS ARE MOOP! Smokers, be responsible for your butts! We recommend you bring an ashtray OR carry a MOOP Ziploc bag around with you)

AT THE EVENT

  • On-site we will have 3-stream bin receptacles:

    • MIXED RECYCLING= Glass, plastic bottles, rigid plastics and cardboard.

    • LANDFILL= Plastic film, paper, most packaging, soiled food containers, and broken items.

    • CANS= Empty and crushed

  • Entry Gate 2-Bag Program

    • Upon arrival each group will receive a CLEAR landfill bag and a semi-transparent BLUE recycling bag.

    • Throughout the weekend the Transfer station will take your sorted BLUE mixed recycling bags for FREE.

    • The CLEAR landfill bag will be either packed out by each camp or a 10$ impact fee per bag upon drop off at the Transfer Station.

  • Lets get trashy, not trashed!

    • There will be cool rewards for participants that voluntarily pick up trash, help collect and sort, and show overall campsite sustainability efforts.

RESPECT THE LAND + HELP EDUCATE OUR COMMUNITY:

  • We are guests to this land.  Please respect other living beings.  If you see plants, critters, and even insects on site, please leave them be and give them space to do their thing.

  • We would like to acknowledge that this event is being held on the traditional lands of the Morongo and Agua Caliente bands of Cahuilla Indians, and pay our respect to elders both past and present.

  • We acknowledge that not only are we on their lands, but that they are still here and part of the community. We think it is important to be aware and informed of the history of the people and land that you are present with. One easy way you could do this is by checking out these links and cultural resources:

    • Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians PDF containing cultural history, beautiful photos, and quotes from elders.

    • Cultural Resources Directory for current traditional ecological knowledge, maps, and news articles.

    • Homepage for Cahuilla Tribe Sovereignty, mission, and values.

      BEFORE YOU LEAVE FESTIVAL GROUNDS

    • LEAVE SPACE IN YOUR CAR TO TAKE ALL OF YOUR TRASH BACK WITH YOU!
Remember, there are no dumpsters or trash bins on-site!

    • PACK IN, PACK OUT! Pack everything you brought with you, including: personal belongings, camping equipment, leftover food, compost, garbage, recycling, etc.!
